At the peak of Arif
Posted on 18. Apr, 2009 by yoyo.
When you catch your breath you look around. the view is incredible. and also undescribable. I won’t even try. at the highest point there is a short metal stick with a Hebrew engraving. “ויש כאלה שנשארים כאן”, “And there are those who stay here” it says. makes you wonder. why would anyone stay there? it’s [...]

The next day is dedicated to getting to Karkom mountain. you can rush through the day and earn some time on Mt. Karkom at this day. your decision.
From Arif camping take the green trail south-east to wadi Ma’azer. get on the black trail which will take you through a bunch of hills and wadis very rarely visited. at the end of [...]

Mt. Arif to Mt. Karkom: day two

Going south from ‘Wells of Oded’ camp area you get to the actual wells. you’ll see a few fence covered holes with different levels of water in them. if you want a drink be sure to use purifiers and I recommend boiling as well. it’s not tasty and said to carry Bilharzia (parasitic desease).
When we were there a big [...]

Mt. Arif to Mt. Karkom: day one
Posted on 18. Apr, 2009 by yoyo.
My personal peak of peaks of Israeli tracks. for those who like yellowish views. the 360 degrees fantastic view from Mt. Arif (הר עריף)to the unexplainable ancient rock engravings of Mt. Karkom (הר כרכום). A tough trail for the strong legged and stubborn minded.
3-4 days track, high intensity. the park is only open for travelers [...]

Mt. Arif to Mt Karkom: day four

Well, this is it. the day we’ve waited for. well, at least I had. growing up in Sde-Boker Mt. Karkom seemed like the far-away-unachievable place of glory. distant, closed and mysterious. I was not dissapointed. five times I was there, five times I loved it. Definately going back.
Karkom mountain is a big flat surface covering a [...]

Relapsing Fever
Posted on 17. Apr, 2009 by yoyo.
On my last trip to the Negev I was bitten by a tick and had to take preemptive anti-biotic pills to prevent the Relapsing Fever from showing.
Some Israeli caves and rock-shaded spots are infested by ticks ( Ornithodoros tholozani) which may carry the Relapsing Fever. they are big and soft and sleep in the cracks and holes of the cave. [...]

Getting around

The Israeli public transportation isn’t great but it is pretty good. there is one train companythat goes from Naharia in the north to Dimona in the south. it also has a line to Jerusalem and Ben-Gurion Airport. for bus transport between cities you have Egged (mostly center and north), Metrpoline (center and south only), connex [...]
