Ups: 1. GREAT trekking opportunities (Fan mountains, Pamir).
2. Warm hospitable people. especially Western Fan mountains.
3. Ice-cream (mirozhna in Russian) machine at every corner, especially in Khorog.
4. Dushanbe is great for finding Western food products.
Downs: 1. Expensive, well relatively expensive, public transport. especially in the Pamir.
2. Very bad ifrastructure (roads, electricity), especially in the Pamir.

After spending 2 weeks in Dushanbe, unable to get a visa to China, we had enough. Too much city-time, and too much food. Solution: head to the Pamirs.

We have extended our Tajik visa in Dushanbe, without any travel agent.
The consular services office is in Pushkin 30/1, Dushanbe. 8:30-10:30 applications, 14:00-17:00(?). you must give them a filled form (found at the office) 2 copies, 2 passport size photos, photocopy of your passport (information page and Tajik visa page). you are then sent to [...]

Penjikent: Nematov Niyozul’s homestay, Rudaki 22/16, niyozkul@mail.ru. it’s behind some small restaurants in the western edge of towns. nice quite place full of tourists.
